Family Caregiving, Women’s Strength Training, Dementia Resident Clashes 7-28-26
In our July 28, 2026 News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club podcast episode Elizabeth Magallon Fleury shared insights from a New York Times article on the emotional and financial toll of family caregiving, highlighting the need for better planning and communication. “Millions of Americans are stepping into one of the hardest roles they’ll ever take on, caring for their aging parents. Times Opinion interviewed dozens of family caregivers across the country to paint a portrait of the American elder care crisis.”
Ellen Khalifa presented a Medical News Today article on the benefits of strength training for women, noting that adding two hours of strength training weekly can reduce heart attack risk by 44%. This article doesn’t specifically mention aging, but we do know that the risk of cardiovascular disease rises sharply for postmenopausal women.
Benjamin Surmi discussed the issue of violence among dementia residents in care facilities, emphasizing the need for systemic changes and better-designed living environments. Our discussions also touched on the importance of regular exercise and the challenges of managing caregiving responsibilities.
