Carol Chiang introduced Duncan Orrell-Jones and discussed the potential of the Camino mobility rollator for aiding in Parkinson’s treatment.
Duncan Orrell-Jones from Camino Mobility, who discussed their smart walker designed to track gait metrics and improve mobility. He explained the inspiration behind Camino Mobility, including making devices less clunky and more assistive.
Lee St. James introduced Mindy, a social robot for reducing isolation. She explained the four key ways Mindy can impact older adults and caregivers, including music therapy, brain games, and simple conversation. Lee emphasized the importance of making robots non-human-looking to avoid confusion and maintain relationships between humans.
Sebastian Arias from Cosmos Robotics highlighted their telecompanionship robot Aby in nursing homes. Aby is designed to assist nurses with administrative tasks. He mentioned their partnership with Segway for manufacturing.
Angus Addlesee, who shared insights on multi-party interaction and the importance of understanding the context of the conversation with robots in memory care clinics. Angus was working with Spring Team – adapting conversational AI for use in a hospital’s memory clinic. Angus was working with a robot that is taller than usual.
Frances West emphasized the importance of accessibility and standards in robotics. She mentioned the Piaggio Gita robot, which was designed with input from senior users and is commercially available.
