Transportation for Japan Aging Rural Population; 70 is the New 50 in the USA 11-25-25

Live from Japan, Ginger Griggs presented the critical challenge of maintaining adequate transportation services due to the convergence of the aging and declining population, along with depopulation in rural areas (which can leave residents stuck in a “ transportation desert”). With about 1/3 of our population in Japan 65+ years old, and a huge percent of them living alone, the ability to get out to reach necessary services, or to have them come to you, is of huge concern.

Following up on self-driving vehicles in Japan, coincidentally, today I came across the Nikkei Asia article referenced below.

I have taken the liberty to share the contents of the article just among us. The part that is particularly pertinent in light of yesterday‘s program is:
“Tony Han, founder and CEO of autonomous vehicle startup WeRide, told Nikkei Asia on Tuesday that although his company currently has no operation in the lucrative U.S. market, he is optimistic about other overseas opportunities, particularly in the Middle East, Europe and developed Asian countries including Singapore, Japan and South Korea.
“We have already rolled out robobus services in multiple cities in Japan,” Han said. “We can also supply robotaxi services in the country, depending on market needs.”
